I have never fought a political battle with Dominic Cummings, but I have played chess against him. We are both obsessed with the game or, more correctly, he was but has been in recovery from this addiction for many years. Still, when he plays, you see the passion for it returning, and the complete concentration over many hours that it demands.

Indeed, his unbreakable focus during the seven hours of questioning last week from the combined science and technology, and health and social care committees of 22 MPs reminded me of how a chess master is able to take on numerous opponents in simultaneous displays that can last for a similar period.
