The Queen's Gambit is an upcoming Netflix series which is based on the book of the same name from 1983. The series follows chess prodigy Beth Harmon (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) and she has an ambition which turns into an addiction. The new series hit the spotlight in September 2020 and fans will be pleased to hear a release date has already been announced.

The series will make its debut on the streaming platform on October 23, 2020, so viewers only have a few weeks left to wait.

As the series is a Netflix Original, all six episodes should arrive on the platform at the same time.

Viewers in the US should be able to watch the episodes from midnight, whereas fans in the UK will have to wait until 8am.

In March 2019 Netflix gave the show a series order of six episodes, which will be directed by Scott Frank.

As mentioned previously Anya Taylor-Joy will star as main character Beth Harmon, an orphan who has a dream of becoming a chess champion.

Moses Ingram will join her as Jolene - an older orphan who formes an intimate relationship with Beth.

Thomas Brodie-Sangster will star as Benny Watts, a young chess star who is one of Beth's toughest opponents.

Harry Melling plays Harry Beltik, a chess champion who becomes fascinated by Beth's talent.

Marielle Heller plays Mrs Alma Wheatley, Beth's adoptive mother, and Bill Camp plays Mr Shaibel, a janitor who introduces Beth to chess.

Fans will be pleased to hear Netflix has released an official trailer for the series, which shows Beth as a child as she first learns about the game.

She is one of the only women who has made a name for herself in the world of competitive chess, and this draws attention from the media.

Beth says as an orphan she does not mind being alone, as she feels "safe in a world of 64 squares".

There is one player in particular who scares her, a Russian man who is world champion, and she is given the opportunity to compete against him.

Observers think Beth must have psychotic traits due to her talent, and she starts to believe the same.

The series is based on the novel of the same name which was written by Walter Tevis and was released in the early 80s.

The episodes focus on Beth who struggles with addiction during her mission to become a Grandmaster in the game of chess.

Some of the episodes have already been named, and the titles include Adjournment, End Game, Exchanges and Fork.

The official Netflix synopsis says: "When winning takes everything, what are you left with? The Queens Gambit follows a young chess prodigys rise from an orphanage to the world stage.

"But genius comes with a cost. A riveting adaptation of Walter Tevis groundbreaking novel comes to Netflix on October 23, starring Anya Taylor-Joy."

Fans are excited to see Taylor-Joy in this challenging role, and many believe she is already Oscar material.

She said: "I don't know how to explain this but she has a very cinematic face, distinct enough to be memorable but doesn't overpower the film or story....yet plain enough that she can be moulded into any character. Is she creepy? Is she innocent? Is she sassy? She can't be typecast."

Another fan said: "Anya Taylor -Joy really is one of the best young actresses. Her filmography is insane."

The 24-year-old American-British actress is known for her roles in Split, Glass and The Witch.

The Queen's Gambit arrives on Netflix on October 23
