‘The Queen’s Gambit’ Trailer: Anya Taylor-Joy Is A Chess-Prodigy Carving Her Place In A Man’s World – Mashable India

Grandmaster Chess

The Queen's Gambit is based on an American novel by Walter Trevis. It follows the life of a fictional chess prodigy named Beth Harmon from her childhood in an orphanage right up to her teenage years where she struggled with tranquiliser and alcohol addiction and her subsequent rise through the Grandmaster ranks. The novel was well-received and was lauded for its technical accuracy. Going by the brief teaser, it looks like the seven-episode series has done an equally job at capturing the chaotic life of the protagonist.

While the teaser/date-announcement gave us a peek into the mind of the mini-series' protagonist, Beth Harmon, the trailer really shows us how exactly she views the world. We have to keep in mind that in order to deal with the trauma of her past and her present, she is drugged up most of the time. But that doesn't mean that she isn't thinking about chess and not necessarily always in a good way. I love the fact that the chess pieces haunt her like spectral figures in a horror movie/show, and the way she reacts to them almost emulates how she deals with humans in her life i.e. like chess pieces.

Time and again I have said that Taylor-Joy is one of the best actresses out there and by the looks of it, she has done a spectacular job in The Queen's Gambit as well. Now, in addition to looking forward to her performance, I am also excited about two things: Harry Melling's (Harry Potter's Dudley Dursley) role, who has struck quite a deal with Netflix (Yes, he has done The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, The Old Guard, The Devil All the Time, and now this) and Scott Frank's vision, since he comes with an impressive CV filled with the screenplays for Malice, Minority Report, and Logan.

The Queen's Gambit drops on Netlfix on October 23.
