Sunday turned out to be a historic high for Indian chess. The Indian team were declared joint-winners along with Russia in the FIDE online Olympiad after the grand finale was hit by server malfunction and internet disruptions. Russia sealed the deal initially after India young guns --- Nihal Sarin and Divya Deshmukh -- lost out on time in the second leg of the final as they suffered from server disconnection. India appealed against the decision and FIDE --- after reviewing it --- declared both teams as winners. FIDEs decision to award the gold to both India and Russia proved to be a subject of intense debate on social media. However, former world chess champion Viswanathan Anand felt it was a fair decision by the games governing body. You have to look at how the match was placed when the interruptions occurred. Nihal's position had improved substantially, and Divya was almost winning or at least much better. FIDE took that into account before arriving at the decision which was fair to both teams, Anand said.
